Just give a bottle—it’ll be much easier.”

„My children were formula-fed, and they turned out perfectly healthy.”

„You don’t have enough milk. There’s no point struggling.”

This is a topic that means a great deal to me because, in my work with mothers, I see how often a lack of support from family and friends leads women to stop breastfeeding earlier than they had hoped.

If I hear comments like these while a mother is still on the postnatal ward—sometimes only two days after giving birth—I know that the weeks ahead may become even more challenging.

Research consistently shows that social support is one of the strongest factors influencing how long mothers continue breastfeeding.

Perhaps that’s why this article is mainly for women who have already decided that breastfeeding is important to them. They don’t need convincing that it is the best nutritional start they can offer their baby. What they may need is the confidence to ask for support before their baby is born.

You might say something like: „If I’m exhausted after several sleepless nights and you want to help me, please don’t tell me to give up breastfeeding. Encourage me instead. Help me. Believe in me.”

The comments at the beginning of this article usually don’t come from bad intentions. Quite the opposite – our loved ones genuinely want to help. When they see how tired we are, they naturally look for what seems like the quickest solution.

The problem is that, during your most vulnerable moments, those well-meaning words may lead you to give up something that truly matters to you.

That’s why, alongside choosing a pram, cot or car seat, it’s worth preparing something far less obvious before your baby arrives—your own breastfeeding support network.

Preparing for Breastfeeding Means Preparing for Support

When we’re expecting a baby, we spend hours choosing the perfect pushchair, nursery furniture, baby clothes and equipment.

Far less often do we ask ourselves an equally important question:

Who will support me emotionally when breastfeeding feels difficult?

Because the early days of breastfeeding can be challenging.

You may experience: sore nipples, breast engorgement, exhaustion, frequent feeding, moments of self-doubt, worries that your baby isn’t getting enough milk.

All of these can be normal.

They do not mean that breastfeeding won’t succeed.

Why Words Matter

Imagine that after your third sleepless night someone says:

„Why are you putting yourself through this? Just give some formula.”

Or:

„Your milk is too thin. Your baby is still hungry.”

Or:

„You probably don’t have enough milk.”

Do comments like these actually help?

In my opinion, they don’t.

They don’t solve the problem.

They don’t explain why breastfeeding is painful.

They don’t help your baby feed more effectively.

They don’t increase your milk supply.

What they can do is undermine the confidence of a mother who is already exhausted and full of doubts.

Support Isn’t About Making Decisions for a Mother

If a woman says,

„Breastfeeding is really important to me,”

the most supportive response is not to encourage her to abandon that goal at the first difficulty.

Real support sounds more like this:

„I can see this is really hard for you. I’m here with you.”

„It’s completely understandable that you’re having doubts.”

„It’s no surprise you’re exhausted. You’re caring for a newborn while learning something completely new.”

„I really want to help because I know breastfeeding matters to you.”

„You’re doing an amazing job for your baby.”

„Look how far you’ve already come. Every feed matters.”

„Would you like me to help you find a Certified Lactation Consultant?”

„I’ll make dinner while you feed the baby.”

„I’ll take the baby for a walk so you can get some sleep.”

What a difference those words can make.

Build Your Support Network Before Birth

You don’t need a large group of people.

Sometimes, two or three are enough.

Think about people who:

– respect your decisions,

– listen without judging,

– take your concerns seriously,

– will support you even if they didn’t breastfeed themselves,

– help you find solutions instead of immediately suggesting that you stop breastfeeding.

Your support network might include:

– your husband or partner,

– your sister,

– a close friend,

– your mother,

– your midwife,

– a Certified Lactation Consultant (CDL),

– a local breastfeeding support group.

The most important thing is that they understand and respect your goal.

How Can You Prepare Your Support Network?

Talk to the people closest to you during pregnancy.

You could simply say:

„Breastfeeding is very important to me. I know the beginning may be difficult. If I become exhausted or start doubting myself, I’d really like you to help me find solutions before suggesting that I stop breastfeeding.”

It’s a simple conversation, but it may make an enormous difference a few weeks later.

In Summary

If you hope to breastfeed, prepare not only for labour and the first days with your baby, but also for the moments when you’ll need encouragement and support.

This isn’t about surrounding yourself with people who will pressure you to breastfeed at all costs.

It’s about choosing people who will respect your decision and help you achieve the goal that matters to you.

A good support network won’t solve every problem for you.

But when you’re at your lowest, it may mean hearing:

„I’m here with you. Let’s find a solution together.”

instead of:

„Why are you putting yourself through this?”

Sometimes, those few words are all a mother needs to find the strength to take the next step.

Return to the list of articles

Breastfeeding is easier when you don’t have to do it alone.
